COMMON TIDES: LINKING PEOPLE OF THE ASIA-PACIFIC AND THE UNITED STATES

This exhibition explores nearly two and a half centuries of contacts between Americans and the peoples of the Asia-Pacific, highlighting exchanges between political leaders, military personnel, sports stars, medical researchers, creative pioneers, educators, and philanthropic organizations.

70 FOR 70: CELEBRATING U.S.-INDONESIA RELATIONS (1949-2019)

The exhibition commemorates 70 years of U.S.-Indonesian diplomatic bilateral relations in 2019, as well as to reaffirm the U.S. commitment to a strong and continuing partnership.

JAM SESSION: AMERICA’S JAZZ AMBASSADORS EMBRACE THE WORLD

Jam Session—Meridian’s most popular exhibition to date—chronicled the international tours of legendary jazz musicians who were selected by the U.S. State Department to serve as roving cultural “ambassadors” from the 1950s through the 1970s. More than 100 compelling images portrayed the journeys of music greats such as Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, Dave Brubeck, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Benny Carter, and Sarah Vaughan.

PAST FORWARD: CONTEMPORARY ART FROM THE EMIRATES

MCCD partnered with the UAE Embassy to share the UAE’s compelling narrative and rich cultural heritage through this groundbreaking cultural diplomacy art initiative, which became a powerful tool for finding common ground, building lasting relationships, and fostering respect. Through these works of art, Past Forward provided a platform for Americans and Emiratis to better understand one another through first-hand insight into life and culture in the UAE.

GREAT AND GOOD FRIENDS: CELEBRATING 200 YEARS OF U.S.-THAI RELATIONS

In commemoration of 200 years of friendship between the United States and the Kingdom of Thailand, the Meridian Center for Cultural Diplomacy, in partnership with the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, organized an exhibition at the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles displaying the official gifts exchanged between the two nations at significant moments over the past 200 years.


EYES ON THE ARCTIC: U.S.-CANADA COLLABORATION IN THE NORTH

Eyes on the Arctic provides an engaging examination of U.S.-Canadian activities near the hemisphere’s pole with a dynamic multimedia display. Indigenous communities, with millennia of history in the region, communicate and share an intimate knowledge of the environment with researchers of both nationalities. Together, the resulting surveys and discoveries allow for a more complete understanding of the complexities of the northernmost reaches of the globe.

PACIFIC PITCH: U.S.-JAPAN BASEBALL DIPLOMACY

Pacific Pitch: U.S-Japan Baseball Diplomacy, charts the history of our shared national pastime from its introduction to Japan at the end of the 19th century to present day. This exhibition uses more than 50 facsimiles of archival photographs and ephemera to relay how Japan and the United States have bonded through friendly competition.

PATH TO HARMONY: THE UNITED STATES AND CHINA 1784-1979

Path to Harmony: The United States and China, 1784-1979, chronicles the longstanding relationship between the United States and China, beginning with initial contact and extending through normalization of relations. This exhibition highlights the way in which the United States and China have developed a stable bond based on national interests, trade, cultural exchanges, diplomacy, and the equality of nations.

KINDRED NATIONS: THE UNITED STATES AND INDIA 1783-1947

Covering such themes as early trade, education, philosophy and religion, entertainment and the arts, and our countries’ shared vision for freedom, Kindred Nations includes nearly 80 images, documents, and ephemera from institutions, archives, and private collections around the United States.

As Canada celebrates the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017, Meridian International Center, with support from the Embassy of the United States in Ottawa, is pleased to present two exhibitions that showcase the relationship between our nations as distinguished neighbors.

KEEPING FAITH: INDIAN RELIGIONS IN THE UNITED STATES

The presentation illustrates how Indian Americans practice their faith traditions – such as Diwali, the Eids, Guru Nanak’s birthday, Holi, etc. – in the United States, and how Indian faith traditions have been adopted by American communities.

A TALE OF TWO SEAS: FROM DILMUN TO BAHRAIN

Meridian International Center and the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA), along with the Embassy of the Kingdom of Bahrain, partnered to launch A Tale of Two Seas: From Dilmun to Bahrain, a widely anticipated cultural diplomacy exhibition that brings Bahraini heritage to the United States for the first time.

CHINA TOWN: CONTEMPORARY CERAMIC PAINTING FROM JINGDEZHEN

China Town: Contemporary Ceramic Painting from Jingdezhenincluded 56 paintings on porcelain that highlighted the artistic trends emerging in Jingdezhen—the Chinese city famous for its thousands-year-old tradition of ceramic production.

IN SMALL THINGS REMEMBERED: THE EARLY YEARS OF U.S.-AFGHAN RELATIONS

In Small Things Remembered told the story of the first Afghan diplomatic mission to the United States in 1921, the establishment of diplomatic relations in the mid-1930s, and other important developments.

THE GLORY OF UKRAINE: SACRED IMAGES FROM THE 11TH TO THE 19TH CENTURIES

Meridian International Center presented an exhibition of icons from the collections of the oldest monastery in Ukraine, the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, the Lviv National Museum, and a selection of ancient artifacts from the Museum of National Cultural Heritage PlaTar.

THE WILD SWANS: ORIGINAL ARTWORKS BY HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN OF DENMARK

This exhibition featured Her Majesty the Queen of Denmark’s decoupages and costumes for a new film adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s well-known tale by JJ Films in Copenhagen.

PRESERVATION BY DESIGN: SAFEGUARDING THE WORLD’S CULTURAL HERITAGE

This exhibition featured works by local photographers living in or near endangered sites in Cambodia, China, Colombia, India, Libya, Peru, and Turkey.

RUFINO TAMAYO AND THE MIXOGRAFÍA® YEARS (1974-1990): A CROSS BORDER JOURNEY

Meridian, together with the MIXOGRAFÍA® workshop and Landau Traveling Exhibitions in Los Angeles, displayed a stunning exhibition of 39 signed prints by renowned Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo (1899-1991).

This exhibition was drawn from the Timkov Collection of Timothy and Lisa Wyman and features remarkable landscapes by renowned Russian painter Nikolai Timkov (1912-1993).
