This portrait honors documentary photographer and activist, James “Jim” Prigoff (1927-2021). He dedicated his career to chronicling San Francisco’s aerosol art scene, leading to an invaluable archive of more than 100,000 photographs of public murals. Due to street art’s ephemeral nature and urban environments’ ever-changing landscape, artworks are lost to time without photography to preserve and disseminate these works beyond their physical location.

I was chosen to paint the subject because of my personal connection to Mr. Prigoff who was known for his activism and unwavering support in the aerosol community for decades.”
— Vouge

Norman “Vogue” Chuck has been painting with aerosol for more than 35 years as a graffiti pioneer innovating spray can techniques currently utilized today. Vogue started out as a youth painting Oakland’s train yards with the intent of learning how to bend and manipulate his own letter structures and styles. His ever-changing evolution paved the way as the first wave of teens to paint prolific large-scale lettering and photorealistic portraits on the West Coast in the mid 80’s. After decades of artistry, Vogue’s art stays relevant with a younger audience by painting huge pieces at high speeds with dynamic color choices and flair. Inspired by BMX, lowrider culture, and nature, Vogue camouflages the mirrored reflections of the surrounding environment into the background, foreground and chrome of his murals. From Hawaii to Dubai, Vogue has created murals for clients such as Netflix, Golden State Warriors, Red Bull and Converse. Bringing as much joy to his private commissions as he does to his public art installations and sculptures, Vogue continues to merge graffiti art with ventures into video and the digitally animated NFT metaverse.
