Muck Rock painted this work portraying two Indigenous Americans from the Sioux tribe, in response to the attempted construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) in the northern United States. In 2015, the pipeline sparked months-long protests because of its impact on the region’s water quality, ancient burial grounds, and historic cultural sites. The Sioux and their supporters believe the DAPL violates Native Americans’ rights to autonomy over their reservation lands.

The portraits, painted in sepia tones, were doused with black oil paint upon completion. The drips across it symbolize the fear of oil spillage from the pipeline on native lands.
