Hero depicts late U.S. Congressman John Lewis (1940-2020) mid-speech at the 1963 March on Washington, a pivotal moment in American history. Accompanying the portrait is an excerpt from his speech that reads “I appeal to all of you to get into this great revolution that is sweeping this nation. Get in and stay in the streets of every city, every village and hamlet of this nation until true freedom comes, until the revolution of 1776 is complete.” Painted roughly six stories tall, this mural overlooks Auburn Avenue, which is considered by many to be the birthplace of the American civil rights movement.

Our goal with this piece was to celebrate and bring attention to the great John Lewis, and its accompanying quote is meant to inspire the youth of the neighborhood and city.
