District V honors Roslyn Pope (1938-2023), a member of Atlanta’s first all-Black Girl Scout troop. The mural reads, “The Future Is Bright,” and features a vibrant, geometric background, which contrasts the realistic black and white portrait of Pope at its center. Street art often relies on the context of its location to amplify its meaning. In this case, the mural is located on the building that housed Atlanta’s oldest Black-owned newspaper and where Pope’s troop regularly held meetings.

Pope, who dedicated her life to public service, civil rights, and Black rights, was the very definition of representation, and yet relatively few know about her achievements
