Inspired by American artist Norman Rockwell's painting of the same name, this mural shows an African American father and mother putting their sons to bed. It recontextualizes the Rockwell painting, which features a similar composition of an American family during the Blitz in World War II. Instead of holding a newspaper with headlines of the Nazi attack on the United Kingdom, the headlines in Trenier’s rendition are about police violence, particularly against Black men and women, in the modern-day United States.
““[Freedom from Fear] is dedicated to the memory of George Floyd, Tamir Rice, Philando Castile, Eric Garner, Breonna Taylor, Sandra Bland, Ahmaud Arbery, Michael Brown and countless others who lost their lives unnecessarily.”
